So many of us have been disturbed by low-flying helicopters. We finally got a method to file Helicopter noise complaints.

A 2021 report by the General Accounting Office (GAO), originally requested by Beyer and other members of the [Quiet Skies] Caucus, [including MD Representative Jamie Raskin], recommended that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) “develop a mechanism to exchange helicopter noise information with operators in the D.C. area.” The just-announced pilot program was developed with this recommendation in mind and will be evaluated by FAA for potential permanent adoption after a 60-day trial run.

“It is important to note that this system is a pilot program, and its success depends on our community. Anyone with a helicopter noise complaint can submit it online at plainenoise.com/dcmetro/, by phone at 877-209-3200, or via mobile app. Providing as much information as possible when leaving a complaint is crucial – details will help to review and process the complaint.

The airport noise problems in southern Maryland – North landing to DCA

When I first started to investigate the airport noise problems in southern Maryland, I did not know anything about the north landing at DCA. We have problems with NextGen that are unique. For the north landing, ATC at DCA direct airplane to fly due south of DCA as far as La Plata Maryland. the aircraft then make a 180 turn and fly to DCA. I have counted as many as nine aircraft lined up to land at DCA. The aircraft uses GPS signals and electronics on each aircraft to broadcast their position Each aircraft and the ATC knows where each plane is at any given moment. Using this technology, the DCA ATC can bring in each aircraft to land at DCA one after the other. This process reduces the amount of time it would have taken to bring in aircraft in a given period. Last week I had a conversation with a neighbor about all the airplanes flying over our community. The gentleman stated that he intended to sell his home and move to Florida. He expressed little interest in making phone calls and writing letters to politicians for assistance. I informed him that his ability to sell his home and the price he would receive would be negatively affected by aircraft noise.
