The “QUIET SKIES COALITION

Over 70,000 aircraft flies over Accokeek every year. Some residents of Accokeek, Fort Washington, and Bensville are experiencing intolerable noise due to the FAA NextGen choice of flight paths. When I moved here, there was no airport noise.  In the past three years, there has been a deterioration in our quality of life caused by the loud noise and emissions from jet engines from the numerous aircraft that fly over our communities every day. We can no longer enjoy our outdoor activities, sunrooms, patios, cookouts and summer events.
The noise started in 2014 and has gotten worse with time. This increased noise was caused by the FAA decisions to implement the NextGen program (DCA metroplex). The FAA has become a government agency controlled by the Airlines. The FAA is using its discretionary power to implement the DCA metroplex to save the Airlines money and push the cost to our communities.
For every dollar the Airline save with NextGen we pay a cost, lower property values and problems with our health.
The FAA is a government organization, funded by the taxpayers.  Through the political system, a series of decisions were made that lead to airport noise in our communities. If the decisions by the FAA is reversed, it will be through the political and judicial system.
There is little organized opposition in the communities affected by the north landing, Accokeek, Fort Washington, and Bensville. From my research, several people sounded the alarm and worked against the decision by the FAA DCA metroplex to direct a disproportion share of aircraft traffic to our area.
If you are concerned about the airplanes flying low over your community join with me and others to take collective actions to get relief from the FAA.
  1. Write letters to politicians
  2. Write letters to the news media
  3. Volunteer to talk to the print and electronic media
  4. Identify, inform those in the north landing how their property values are reduced
  5. Identify, inform those in the north landing how their health is affected by jet emission
  6. Identify a group of people who are willing to work together to oppose Nextgen

On this  Website, people who wish to engage in collective action can come to gather to create strategies against Nextgen and to share information.

“The squeaky wheel gets the grease”.The communities in Northern Virginia, except for Mt. Vernon in Virginia received a reduction in noise levels. Communities in Maryland north of DCA received a reduction in noise levels when air traffic shifted from the south landing to the north landing. Communities in Accokeek, Fort Washington, and Bensville received an increase in noise levels.
If you want to see a good model for effective opposition against the FAA, I encourage you to check out the Montgomery County web site “Montgomery County Quiet Skies Coalition.” I hope we can develop a Website that will educate those adversely affected by the north landing.

Montgomery County appropriated over $300,000 for a noise study to submit to the FAA to support their case in reducing airport noise. The Montgomery County, Quiet Skies Coalition, write a lot of letters to politicians and seem to get very good results from their efforts.

“Prince George's County's Climate Action Plan (CAP)

The Prince George’s County Council established The Prince George’s Climate Action Commission with Council Resolution  CR-07-2020  to develop a Climate Action Plan for Prince George’s County to prepare for and build resilience to regional climate change impacts, and to set and achieve climate stabilization goals.

Against Beltway Expansion

[PGSC Climate Action] Join Me in Speaking Out Against the Beltway Expansion Our community's health and future are on the line. On October 15th, the Transportation Planning Board will vote on the "Southside Project," a massive beltway expansion that would increase air pollution and traffic in our neighborhoods. I shared in my testimony, this isn't just about traffic, it's personal. I was diagnosed with environmentally triggered asthma at the age of 37, a condition worsened by vehicle pollution. This expansion would fill our air with more harmful pollutants like PM2.5 and ozone, which are known to aggravate respiratory conditions and pose a risk to all of us. But our voices can make a difference. The board needs to hear how this project will impact real people. Will you join me in writing a letter? Share your own story, whether it's concerns about your family's health, the dangerous traffic on roads like MD-210, or the need for better transit options instead...

Aircraft Noise - The noise in southern Prince George’s Country has become a problem

As a result of the FAA’s NextGen program, the noise in southern Prince George’s Country has become a problem. The FAA direct over Accokeek Maryland approximately 70,000 aircraft a year using the north flow arrivals, approximately 200 airplanes a day. If you love your children, love your spouse and love your self you should read this article. Out of self-interest, you should get involved in organized opposition to the FAA implementation of the D.C. metroplex Regan North landing. The noise from overhead aircraft is constant on most days from approximately 6 am until midnight. The FAA direct over Accokeek approximately 70,000 aircraft a year using the north flow arrivals, approximately 200 airplanes a day. Most aircraft fly at an altitude of fewer than 2,500 feet. Research indicates this emission from aircraft jet engines travels as far as 10 miles in every direction. “The Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment is a research lab in the MIT Depar...
