The “QUIET SKIES COALITION

Over 70,000 aircraft flies over Accokeek every year. Some residents of Accokeek, Fort Washington, and Bensville are experiencing intolerable noise due to the FAA NextGen choice of flight paths. When I moved here, there was no airport noise.  In the past three years, there has been a deterioration in our quality of life caused by the loud noise and emissions from jet engines from the numerous aircraft that fly over our communities every day. We can no longer enjoy our outdoor activities, sunrooms, patios, cookouts and summer events.
The noise started in 2014 and has gotten worse with time. This increased noise was caused by the FAA decisions to implement the NextGen program (DCA metroplex). The FAA has become a government agency controlled by the Airlines. The FAA is using its discretionary power to implement the DCA metroplex to save the Airlines money and push the cost to our communities.
For every dollar the Airline save with NextGen we pay a cost, lower property values and problems with our health.
The FAA is a government organization, funded by the taxpayers.  Through the political system, a series of decisions were made that lead to airport noise in our communities. If the decisions by the FAA is reversed, it will be through the political and judicial system.
There is little organized opposition in the communities affected by the north landing, Accokeek, Fort Washington, and Bensville. From my research, several people sounded the alarm and worked against the decision by the FAA DCA metroplex to direct a disproportion share of aircraft traffic to our area.
If you are concerned about the airplanes flying low over your community join with me and others to take collective actions to get relief from the FAA.
  1. Write letters to politicians
  2. Write letters to the news media
  3. Volunteer to talk to the print and electronic media
  4. Identify, inform those in the north landing how their property values are reduced
  5. Identify, inform those in the north landing how their health is affected by jet emission
  6. Identify a group of people who are willing to work together to oppose Nextgen

On this  Website, people who wish to engage in collective action can come to gather to create strategies against Nextgen and to share information.

“The squeaky wheel gets the grease”.The communities in Northern Virginia, except for Mt. Vernon in Virginia received a reduction in noise levels. Communities in Maryland north of DCA received a reduction in noise levels when air traffic shifted from the south landing to the north landing. Communities in Accokeek, Fort Washington, and Bensville received an increase in noise levels.
If you want to see a good model for effective opposition against the FAA, I encourage you to check out the Montgomery County web site “Montgomery County Quiet Skies Coalition.” I hope we can develop a Website that will educate those adversely affected by the north landing.

Montgomery County appropriated over $300,000 for a noise study to submit to the FAA to support their case in reducing airport noise. The Montgomery County, Quiet Skies Coalition, write a lot of letters to politicians and seem to get very good results from their efforts.

Attend the July Reagan National Community Working Group meeting. The FAA will discuss the health effects of noise on the human body.

The Southern Maryland Fair Skies Coalition was founded to seek solutions to decrease aircraft noise and air pollution south of DCA. The most severely impacted neighborhoods are Accokeek (CDP), Bryans Road (CDP), Bennsville (CDP), and Fort Washington (CDP), Maryland. Most of us can hear noise from low-flying aircraft. We may think the noise is only a nuisance. “Noise is defined as “unwanted sound.” Aircraft noise is one, if not the most detrimental environmental effect of aviation. It can cause community annoyance, disrupt sleep, adversely affect children's academic performance, and increase cardiovascular disease risk in people in the vicinity of airports.” - National Institute of Health (NIH) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5437751/ You may want to attend the July Reagan National Community Working Group meeting. New Helicopter Noise Complaint System for National Capital Region

I received this information from Anne Hollander - Montgomery County Quiet Skies Coalition. Subject: New Helicopter Noise Complaint System for National Capital Region So many of us have been disturbed by low-flying helicopters. We finally got a method to file Helicopter noise complaints. https://www.arlnow.com/press-releases/beyer-regional-officials-unveil-new-helicopter-noise-complaint-system/ A 2021 report by the General Accounting Office (GAO), originally requested by Beyer and other members of the [Quiet Skies] Caucus,  [including MD Representative Jamie Raskin],  recommended that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) “develop a mechanism to exchange helicopter noise information with operators in the D.C. area.” The just-announced pilot program was developed with this recommendation in mind and will be evaluated by FAA for potential permanent adoption after a 60-day trial run. “It is important to note that  this system is a pilot program ,...
